Dauphine’s Story

While traveling in rural Uganda, I met a 10-year-old girl on a dirt road who asked for an education and stole my heart. She didn’t ask for the typical sweets or money.

“I WANT SCHOOL” IS WHAT SHE SAID TO ME

Her name was Dauphine, and when I returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

I met with her mother and a translator to discuss the implications of her leaving home and attending school.

For the family, that meant losing a babysitter, a field worker, and someone to deliver produce to the market. In the subsistence farming community, education is an opportunity that comes with a price.

I sought like-minded people who saw the need to give girls an opportunity they may never have, and Dauphine’s Promise was born.

GIRLS EDUCATION IS OUR MISSION

In response to the community’s wishes, we began to enroll boys as well. Now, one and a half years later, we support the education of ten happy, healthy girls, and one boy. As we continue our journey, we invite you to support us and share your ideas on how we can strengthen this shared dream.

Community Driven Structure

Our structure of “Run by Ugandans, for Ugandans,” bridges the gap of Western and Ugandan philosophies. Policies created for Dauphine’s Promise come in three stages.

This three-stage ‘checks and balances’ formula reflects the leadership style that values differences, inclusive leadership, flexibility, collective thinking, and gender equality.

PHASE ONE

Brainstorming sessions to conceptualize ideas.

1

PHASE TWO

Presenting ideas at community meetings for discourse

2

PHASE THREE

The community's opinions are brought to the board for consideration and policy implementation. The board is drawn from the local community as well as Europe and the United States.

Story of Kasiisi Primary School

Kasiisi Primary school is a co-ed public school serving the Kabarole District in NW Uganda. This rural area is comprised of small villages with mud and straw houses, sporadic electricity, and subsistence farming.

We have partnered with Kasiisi School, one of the only schools willing to accept children of any age regardless of their educational background.
